Spadeoak works with Steel Warriors to create outdoor gym from recycled knives

Leading contractor Spadeoak has completed work on a new outdoor calisthenics gym with a difference.

A majority of the equipment featured in the park in Brixton, South London, is made from recycled knives. It is the latest project from Steel Warriors –  a charity that aims to reduce the number of young people carrying knives in the UK through melting down knives that haven’t been used in conflict and creating spaces for exercise.

Spadeoak laid the sub-base, kerbs, equipment and foundations and rubber cumb top-layer on the project, and those involved are delighted to have played their part in such an important project.

Tom Hickmott, Assistant Contracts Estimator at Spadeoak, said: “We are incredibly proud to have been involved in such a positive initiative. We understand that a key part of tackling knife crime is giving young people an outlet. This gym does exactly that, while getting knives off the street.

“Our crews worked hard to get everything up and running ahead of the launch, and we can’t wait to see it being put to good use.”

The Steel Warriors project aims to create 20 gyms in total, is supported by the Co-op and contractor Harry Grover, and boasts patrons like former world heavyweight champion boxer Anthony Joshua.
